5 Things you have to know before coming in Scotland !
5 things you have to know before coming in Scotland :
This blog post is addressed to all french people who never been in Scotland or UK before. There is some stuff you have to know.1. The weather
You will think maybe that it is quite a cliché, but no. You have to be prepared (even more if you are from the south of France). It is not really cold, but you will have wind and you will have rain. Often. Almost every time actually. But then I can say that you will enjoy the sun much more better than where you used to live!!2. The dinner
I can’t really be sure if it is a scot habit but since I am here I am having my dinner VERY early. You forget dinning at 20H30 / 21h. Most of the time here people eat at 18h or 19h, that could be quite early for you, but you will deal with it ! (It is actually smarter because you have a full night to enjoy with your friends after that !)3. The « pavement sitting area » or the terrace.
You think that is just a French caprice? This is not. If you are used to seat with your friends outside of the bar in France, you will not find many places here to do it. The first reason is that the weather is not very clement for that. But also the truth is that French people smoke a lot. And Scottish have the good habit to be fewer to do that, so take example on them!4. Wine vs Beer
Yep. This is not a cliché either. Don’t try to find wine in Scotland. You will find some ! But it does not really worth it spending so many pounds for wine you will not really like. BUT you will have to turn yourself into beer (if you are not yet). You will enjoy a range of beers much more complete and different that what you were used to ! Try local beers they have to be tested! (Choose a Tennents for Glasgow)5. Be brave...
...and skip the coat as Scottish people! I used to be very surprised when, in the street, I found some half naked people enjoying our 14 degrees celsius (well they was wearing shirts and trousers or shorts, but still, I was surprised!). So don’t be surprised they are just less skittish than you are.So yeah! You will have to be used to some stuff but scottish people will love to see that you try to integrate and you will have much fun !!
